Glad you’re back! Alpha Centauri is as you said visible from south Florida – FL Keys is a good spot (you need to be able to see, dark, close to the horizon – like ocean). It’s quite near the Southern Cross and quite bright (as is Beta Centauri) – one of the cross directions points right to it.
Incidentally, if you travel outside the English-speaking world and decide to try for it – learn the name “Rigil Kent”. Nobody has heard of Alpha Centauri elsewhere. As well as the proper pronunciation of Magellan (hard g) if you want to find those clouds. They are relatively easy to see but if you need help finding them ….
